OCTOBER 2007

"SUMA'S SOUND OF MUSIC"

jumped superbly in the 6 y.o. classes in Lanaken but sadly her one fence down the first day meant no finals.  But a few days later at the Horse of The Year Show in Birmingham she fully exceeded expectations by finishing 4th with Sharon Quigley in the Newcomers jumping 2 fabulous clears.  The bigger the fences get, the better she is jumping. Her half brother by VDL ARKANSAS, S DISTANT DRUMS now 4 and with David Long in Wales has grown from 16 hands in the spring to nearly 16.3 so although he has been jumping clear at a few local shows he is being given time but he is showing all the family potential. The 2 y.o.S DISTANT GLEN by VDL GLENNRIDGE and the yearling S BONO by VDL DOUGLAS are exciting prospects for us to look forward to watch.

CARUSO

And  CARUSO nears the end of his childhood as he will be leaving us at the end of the month.  His sire CARICELLO only 7 yrs old won a Mini Grand Prix last week with Conor Swail.  He is definitely one to watch next year.

"Lots of happenings recently to our stock.  Pictured is SUMA'S ERICA by VDL Ricochet ex Hapi by HOROS USA appearing in the brilliant FEHL 4 y.o. class and subsequently placed 5th in her first One Day Event with her owner Tanya Smith.

SUMA'S EL GRECO, the coloured 3 y.o by TALOUBET VDL is sold back to Ireland and showing a brilliant loose jump.

SUMA'S FANNY BRICE by VDL ARKANSAS also 3 out of Distant Music now in foal to Sound of Music's sire Indoctro is safely back with us now but sadly Music herself is barren for the first time in 7 years.  She deserves a rest and will probably revisit Indoctro.

SUMA'S ALASKA , 6 yr.old, by Archie ex Whippy who was jumping really well here after starting her winning career in the UK was the subject of an offer from Italy that could not be refused. She has left a filly now a 2 y.o which she had before starting her career.

Many others of VDL ARKANSAS are selling well and have performed well all year with placings in the Loose Jumping all round the country and qualifying for the RDS and Cavan Elite.

Some of the prices are:

Cavan Sales:

4.y.o 10,200

3 y.o. 11,500

4 y.o. 7,800

Goresbridge:

5 y.o. 11,200

3.y.o. 18,500

and many others around the 6000 mark.

We have a lovely addition to the ID herd for next year, a 2 y.o  Huntingfield Rebel ex Crosstown Rose who was the ID Champion Yearling a few years ago and is own sister to the RID stallion CROSSTOWN PRIDE. Photo to follow  We think she will be called FULL CIRCLE as its now over 20 years since we sold Fintan Branigan his first horse, TARA SKY, dam of course of CROSSTOWN DANCER and our lovely Rosie SUMA'S SKY'S ABLAZE.

On a personal note I have just returned from a lovely visit to the USA, both to see my family and primarily to Judge and Inspect the IDHSNA horses at their wonderful show in Illinois  Many thanks to all our hosts and co-ordinators for looking after me and my co-judge Padraig so well. We had a ball and it was good to see many old friends of our breeding.

Most especially GARRYOWEN OF SUMA (Shaun) who at 23 yrs old travelled to Chicago from Canada with half a dozen of his offspring who swept the board in the jumping classes.  It was a very emotional moment as I had not seen him since he was sold after winning at the RDS as a foal and he had been "lost" to the breed. Congrats. to the Bowen family who now have him and who are devoted to him. Only he and Murphy are left now as sons of our wonderful PRIDE OF SHAUNLARA

Back at the "ranch" Susie kept the home fires burning and as a reward she will be off next week to watch Maria (and all the rest) at the WYHBreeding Championships in Lanaken, and if she qualifies for the final I will do my best to get there too."

Well we are in raptures as SUMA'S SOUND OF MUSIC "Maria" won the 6 yr old jumping championship Again!!  She was superb and in the past two years has never had a pole down in Ireland!  She has really improved as a ride too and is listening to Dave Quigley, her jockey.  Full marks to him too as he had another of John Connolly's, Uranta, in the 6 horse jump off.

We are also thrilled that Crosstown Dancer "George" won his 4th Stallion Championship and never looked in danger. We have the great satisfaction of having bred his mother.

SUMA'S SOUND OF MUSIC (Maria) has qualified for the RDS again to defend her championship title from last year! Music is having a bit of trouble going in foal this year, after 7 foals in a row, but we are still hopeful she will hold to CLOVER FLUSH     He is a fully approved Irish Sport Horse by Clover Hill out of a King of Diamonds mare which is full of Jumpers.  He was a World Cup winner in Australia 5 times and he has been back in Ireland for the past couple of seasons, retired to stud.

SUMA'S LEGACY after her two empty years in Holland is safely in foal to the young Heartbreaker horse of Kylemore Stud, WOMANIZER.  He is being brought out, very slowly, by Sheila White, and is apparently a model pupil.

Sumas Nevada

The mare is qualifying for the Foxhunter class with a young rider.Stephen Lohoar.  She is from the first crop of VDL ARKANSAS out of a Glenagyle Rebel mare, Sumas Chimera (Pippa)

Glenagyle Rebel at Cavan

Sad news that GLENAGYLE REBEL owned by Mr. Klaus Balzer (Zimbabwe) passed away at Rivervale Stud in Kaw-Sula Natal region of South Africa, where he had been most recently since his dramatic airlift from Zimbabwe a few years ago.  He was our first homebred stallion and one of the best made and versatile Irish Draughts we have ever owned.  He revived the Prince Henry sire line which was about to become extinct when Glenside died. Tom Vance and then Damien McDermott both showjumped him and he had a supreme natural talent.  He reached Grade A in only 2 and a half seasons but once he was proved we stopped competition as travelling with two stallions was awkward and by then we had Crosstown Dancer.  REBEL sired some lovely stock but because he was a total outcross (his dam was by Rusheen Hero, then Merrion) 95% of the mares visiting were Irish Draught.  When he got a chance with a blood mare he produced the likes of the Boomerang winner SPECIAL K, and the Champion Hunter at Cork.  He also left some super stock in South Africa where he was specially imported to use on T.B. mares. Amongst ;his best Irish Draughts were SUMA'S POLL TAX, Champion Irish Draught Filly and Limerick Lady and Matron winner, SUMA'S MAXI, Champion foal at RDS, GINNETTS NADIA, multi winning filly for Toni Gargan, SUMA'S OPPOSITION dam of the Champion foal in 2005 for Patrick Hennessy, CROOKEDWOOD REBEL, REBELARA R.I.D. stallion and Grade A jumper in the U.K. and REBEL YELL (dec.d) who competed in the USA successfully eventing and has left some excellent progeny. Anyone who owned one by Rebel told how easy they were to break and how intelligent they were.

He was one of the bravest hunters that Damien has ever ridden and would take on unjumpable places and get there, putting the heart sideways in those watching him!  His son and heir HUNTINGFIELD REBEL who was his very first foal has inherited all the bravery and talents of his father and the line is now secure in his hands (feet?) We will remember Rebel with great affection and gratitude.

TORITE

Life has been hectic since the start of the building of the new sun room.  But two of our "emigrants" have just returned and 3 of the mares are now at stud.  TORITE (Marlon/Zeoliet) the fabulous jumping machine that has been with Pam Stevenson in Scotland has returned to stud and is visiting the international  G.P winner, JACOMAR (Ramiro) who is at Drumhowan Stud for his first Irish season. Torite was born in The Netherlands at Rite Eqine. SUMA LEGACY (Horos ex Whippy) returned to us last winter having missed for 2 years after her Douglas filly Sumas Anywhere. She did a rapid riding revision in case we can't get her this year although that seems unlikely.  However she can now go out and jump a small track and has a super temperament to go with it.  She has just been covered by Watermill Swatch, the fully approved TB of the Brodericks www.kylemorestud.com    and we will hope to breed a smashing eventer from her.  Legacy's 3 y.o. daughter SUMAS SURPRISE has also just crossed the water back here and she is looking fantastic after being broken by Judith Ribbels in Holland who loved her.  However she needs some good irish grass so will not do the loose jumpi ng circuit and if she is as good as we think she will appear early in 2008.

Sumas Surprise

Her comrade at Stal Ribbels was Fanny Brice (Funny Girl) and she has returned to Thee Schaaps farm and has been inseminated with INDOCTRO which is very exciting as he is now one of the leading showjumping sires in the world!  The produce will be a 3 parts sibling to Sound of Music.

Our 2006 Cavan aquisition Molly the Lady has left us already!  She went away to go in foal to HUNTINGFIELD REBEL (which she now is) and has found a new owner, Denise Holland in Galway.  We hope they will be very happy together.

Our previous stallion inmates have been hitting the headlines too.  This week VDL RICOCHET sired the winner of the Hunter Championship in Balmoral Show!  And to make it even better the dam was by SUMA'S MURPHY'S LAW. And in the recent Event at Kilmanahan the winner of the Novice was VDL FLIGHT, one of VDL ARKANSAS' first crop bred by Cyril Trenier who has been  a supporter of Archie's from the moment he first saw him loose jumping.

The new sun room!

Huntingfield Rebel (RID)

HUNTINGFIELD REBEL appeared at Cavan and Goresbridge Stallion Parades and looked magnificent both times.  At Cavan he put on a real display and also received the Best Turned Out prize, well deserved.  At Goresbridge when let loose in the arena he showed the youngsters a thing or two about jumping!  The phone has been ringing off the hook ever since.

Molly the Lady (RID) (sold)

Our young ID mare Molly the Lady has been duly awarded R.I.D. status at the recent inspections.  She is still backward and was very green but behaved beautifully for us.  She has now gone to Kylemore to visit Rob, of course!

Meanwhile we have been here at Castle House for 11 months and have recently started again on the outside of the house.  Sadly we have to cover the lovely stone but we will use lime plaster and leave it with contours so that it doesnt look flat.  We have also decided to put up a sun room in the front instead of converting the garage to a second reception as we so love the view we are getting from the Bolt Holt (wooden cabin) that we feel we can't live without seeing the mountains from the house.

Castle House

Distant Music is getting larger, due at the very end of May to Caricello.  her daughter, Fanny ( Funny Girl) is being broken in Holland with Judith Ribbels, but she will do very little as she is an overgrown 3 y.o. (168 now)  SOUND OF MUSIC went consistently well on the Spanish Sunshine Tour, regularly jumping double clears.  She is now having a bit of a rest till nearer the RDS qualifiers where she will try to defend her 5 y.o Champion Title as a 6 y.o.

Coffee has now been sold and her daughter Fudge has just gone to the VDL stud to represent Douglas and Pessoa there. We hated letting them go but needs must at our age.
